Your Questions Answered About Asbestos Removal
30.November, 2009
Introduction
In recent years there has been a dramatic increase in the health and safety agenda of handling asbestos, its management and disposal in a safe and secure manner. Where workers have been exposed to asbestos in confined spaces or where fibres have been present, such as during manufacture of items with asbestos as a key component, they are faced with serious health issues. It is now widely recognised that the largest single work related cause of death is asbestos. For this reason alone health and safety information high lights the dangers of incorrect handling of asbestos contaminated products, and the need for safe management and disposal is very high profile.
What is asbestos?
There are generally three forms of asbestos known as brown, blue and more common white asbestos. Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibre and is mined in various countries such as Canada and South Africa but, by far the largest producer is Russia. Although a dangerous substance to be managed, it is still valuable because of its unique resistance qualities, such as being resistant to heat, electricity and noise. It is essential for processing as a key component for items such as brake linings and insulation as well as for industrial use or in building construction.
Asbestos became widely used during the late 19th Century in the programme of building hospitals, factories, schools and farm houses which were all built using materials that contained asbestos. Its qualities of being resistant to heat, flame retardant and a good insulator meant that it was widely recognised as very good construction material in ceilings and walls. It was also widely used as a lagging material to wrap around steam pipes and boilers. Some household products such as early electric ovens also contained asbestos material, due to its excellent heat resistant qualities. Indeed I seem to recall the use of it in a very early electric oven at my grandparent’s house in the mid-late 1960’s. Just think of all those Shepherd Pies she used to make.
Nowadays if asbestos is discovered to be still present within a building, it is likely to cause alarm amongst those residents living in the building. People living close by are also likely to be concerned and very quickly an entire local community may find themselves concerned about the dangers of having asbestos close by.
However, as long as the asbestos is well maintained and is not releasing fibres, into the atmosphere there is no danger to health. Asbestos only becomes dangerous and a health hazard when it’s removal takes place or if you breathe in asbestos fibres, from the surrounding environment. Asbestos is toxic when fibres are breathed in because they lodge in the lungs causing breathing difficulties. The various forms of lung disease are very serious such as bronchiactisis, silicosis, and lung cancer. From the mid-1980’s, countries within the European Union and some of the world’s other most developed countries have banned asbestos due to its high risk health concerns.
Fire damaged properties may need a conventional approach for demolition and particular clean up teams to remove the fire damage sections gradually.
Why is Asbestos Dangerous?
The inhaling of asbestos dust is the cause of debilitating diseases. So, if you work in an environment where many hundreds of asbestos-related particles exist in the air, unless you wear the appropriate face mask protection, you are putting your health at risk.
Of course, many years ago the dangers were unidentified and whilst asbestos related illness may not affect you immediately, in later life the effects will become more apparent. Currently asbestos is responsible for approximately 4000 deaths per year and every week it contributes to the deaths of almost 40 tradesmen, including plumbers, electricians, carpenters and joiners. These trades are particularly at risk because the tradesmen will have been employed in environments where asbestos will have been present. The refurbishment of plumbing work in factories, hospitals, schools, houses and factories will have been a common requirement in recent years. Equally, electricians, carpenters and joiners will have been exposed to similar work in their professional fields.
I used to work for a compressed air equipment manufacturer. The company’s main manufacturing site also included the offices, the manufacturing and assembly plant, the foundry and workshops. The whole site was built in the early 1900s and inevitably had used asbestos products within its construction. In the 1990s with much of the manufacturing moved overseas, it was decided to sell the site for redevelopment and the site has now been entirely demolished, ready for reconstruction. But just think how much of the construction material would have contained asbestos.
Before major demolition works could start, a full site survey including an asbestos survey would have been required to identify and assess how to manage the removal of the asbestos material across the site. Each specific area would have required the advice of an approved asbestos management contractor and assurances of how the asbestos materials would be safely removed and disposed of. Due to the size of the site, this would have been a major task and also a costly one, but an essential requirement to ensure that all regulations relating to the management of asbestos material were adhered to.
Where is Asbestos Found?
If you visit an old building built around the 1950s, it is worth taking a look around to see where asbestos has been used and the types of materials which might contain asbestos. Asbestos cement products, such as large sheets of a corrugated material are likely to be asbestos cement sheets. It is distinguishable as a hard grey coloured material in which asbestos has been mixed with cement. It is likely that if the sheets have been used on the roof, that similar flat sheets will have been used for wall cladding. If a wall has been given a textured coating, then many old wall coating materials contained an asbestos mix to create the texture. On the floor, floor tiles made from asbestos may also be in place. Recognised for its fire retardant qualities, an asbestos spray may also have been used to coat wooden roof beams. Asbestos sprayed on walls and ceilings will have a high content of asbestos and is known to be easily disturbed just by movement and will give off fibres. Then there will be asbestos used as a lagging material on pipes and plumbing equipment.
Old established manufacturing or hospital premises are most likely to present asbestos removals when dismantling or demolishing the building.
Managing and Disposing of Asbestos
Since the avoidance of using asbestos took effect, the normal method by which asbestos is now disposed is through the use of landfill sites. There are however very rigid guidelines on how asbestos should be managed and disposed of.
First you must decide how big a project the job is. If you have asbestos removal to undertake in the home then the best strategy is to employ a fully licensed asbestos removal specialist to remove the toxic waste safely. The basic requirements for protection, including the wearing of a dust mask and a disposable overall, are not suggested as the limit of safety precautions and you will be will be much safer trusting this work to a specialist contractor. If you are removing sheets of asbestos for example from an old garage or shed, simply breaking one sheet up will release potentially harmful asbestos dust and fibres.
As long as there are no electrical cables and connections nearby, the asbestos removal specialist may treat the asbestos to be handled with water spray before commencing the removal of the material. However this kind of thing is not for the novice DIY enthusiast and should be left to an experienced specialist contractor at all times. The removed asbestos cannot simply be placed in your domestic waste for collection, it must be treated separately and either bagged or placed in a dedicated skip for safe disposal by specialists. Personally, I would always seek the advice of an approved asbestos removal contractor, for any work involving asbestos or even the potential for asbestos.
When the need for asbestos removal is much larger than the domestic project, the work should always be undertaken by a licensed commercial asbestos removal company.
These specialists have qualified in the relevant training and certification and will have the correct equipment to manage the task effectively, safely and in accordance with the correct regulations. Older buildings may require a dismantling process to carefully remove any asbestos and this work is likely to involve the use of scaffolding or cranes to be able to undertake this work safely. The most important point to remember is that as the customer, asbestos is on your premises. You are responsible for the removal, handling and safe disposal of the asbestos and to do so without employing an approved contractor could leave you open to prosecution.
To ensure that dedicated skips are used in the disposal of asbestos some waste management contractors operate colour coded skips so that only these are used for asbestos disposal. I know of one leading UK waste management company who have a two tone yellow and red painted skips used solely for the safe transportation and disposal of asbestos. As asbestos is classed as a hazardous waste material, only landfill sites licensed to take asbestos are permitted to accept asbestos onto the site.
I recall a large automotive company going into administration and thousands of brake lining pads had to be removed as part of a major site clearance project. Although they were all boxed, the fact that asbestos had been used in their manufacture meant that a specialist contractor was brought in to manage the removal and disposal of the stock. In today’s environment where recycling is a buzz word, it is very difficult and costly to recycle asbestos. A high temperature process can transform asbestos fibres into a harmless silicate glass or an industrial microwave thermal treatment process can transform asbestos waste into ceramic bricks or tiles.
In the current economic climate companies should compare the costs involved of dismantling then renovating a premises rather than a complete relocation.
Health and Safety Issues when Working with Asbestos
Before commencing any work, if it is thought that asbestos may be present, the project manager must undertake a complete project plan. No employee should be placed at risk, in an environment where asbestos is knowingly located. Through a complete site survey, it must be established if materials containing asbestos are present and the work must be planned to either avoid disturbance or the need to dismantle and remove these materials.
If asbestos materials are to be removed, it is essential that the work should be undertaken by an approved asbestos contractor, who has completed the appropriate asbestos awareness and training courses and is certificated. It is also important to note, whether the premises will need to be vacated whilst the work is to be undertaken. If people remain in or near the area where asbestos is to be removed, disturbance of the material will place anyone in the close vicinity of the project in danger. Other considerations and decisions may need to be taken into account, particularly where there is a need to work at height and to identify precisely which equipment is to be required to complete the task safely.
All major projects, should be supervised throughout and inspected at various stages to ensure that the work complies with regulations at the end of the task, and that it is safe for employees to re-inhabit the premises.
Of course, throughout the project, the contract manager must ensure that arrangements have been made for the safe disposal of all the asbestos waste. For those undertaking the work, vigilance will be required throughout the project to protect their own health. Face masks will be worn, as well as appropriate clothing such as a disposable all in one overall. Clean up as you go is a strategy employed by asbestos removal specialists when they work through the project, to limit the amount of asbestos dust spreading to other parts of the building.
Conclusion
The strict regulations which now surround the handling and management of asbestos will in nearly all cases require that any project involving the disposal of asbestos materials is managed by a specialist asbestos removal contractor.
Without specialist knowledge, awareness and the correct equipment, any project involving asbestos removal brings potential health risks. Any company engaging a contractor who does not comply with the correct legislation, will be responsible themselves, not the contractor. So aside from the health concerns, it is in the interest of the owner of a property to comply with the rules and regulations which govern the management of asbestos projects.
Often referred to as the hidden killer, improved knowledge and awareness of the devastating long term effects that asbestos has upon one’s health is now well documented. It is hoped that in the coming years we will begin to see a decline in asbestos related diseases or illnesses ,as the exposure of those working in asbestos environments is more carefully managed. Unfortunately until the mid-1980s, for those who had worked in or around environments where asbestos was present, the worry of asbestos related death or illness remains.
Whichever way you look at it, asbestos is a pretty unpleasant substance if inhaled and brings cause for concern if it is present in your premises, so seek the advice of a specialist asbestos removal contractor to perform a thorough asbestos survey and ensure the effective and compliant management of your particular project.
Selecting The Right Skydiving Equipment
30.November, 2009
Skydiving is not an activity to be taken lightly, and having the absolute best skydiving equipment is a must for obvious reasons. Many people trust their skydiving company to choose the proper equipment, after all, they know their own domain better than you do, however the other side of the coin is that it’s you who is going to jump out of that plane.
In order to go sky diving in style, you will need everything from a suit to boots and head gear. Skydiving is an activity that often times warrants renting equipment instead of purchasing it because of the sheer cost of buying everything that is needed for an activity that you’re going to do only a couple times a year.
In fact, most companies that offer their services for taking people up into the sky and advising them on the moment to drop include the price of equipment rental in their fee. It is only logical that sky diving gear should be provided by the company who is taking you sky diving.
For customers getting ready to jump, sky diving is not at all an every day occurrence; the feeling of getting ready to jump is totally different for the jumper than for the people who go up with the plane every day to facilitate clients skydiving adventures. Skydiving gear, though high on the list of importance for safety reasons, is not a focal point for people who see sky diving up close every day of the week. Of course, they are not looking to cause accidents, but for them, a parachute is a parachute, not a magic wand.
Always make lots of movements when trying on new gear. Just because it fits you when you are standing up straight this does not mean that it will feel good when you crouch down, for example, just like you will do before you make your jump. When buying gear, look for materials that are resistant and durable, but make sure that the fibers that will be in contact with your body are going to be fibers that feel nice on your skin. Any sort of wool blend is usually not a good idea.
Check and double check the company’s history with concern to their planes and everything inside them as well as the jumper’s equipment from parachute to head gear. Though ultimately, this is the company’s responsibility, every jumper should take the importance of safety and proper skydiving gear into their own hands. When in doubt, seek a second opinion, and always get more recommendations for a sky diving company than you would for a hairdresser.

Record breaking oyster found but no chance of giant pearl
29.November, 2009
An oyster of record breaking size in the UK has been discovered in a market in Plymouth. Narrowly escaping becoming someone’s luxury dinner the giant shellfish, which has been dubbed ‘Shelly’, measures 7” across and weighs 3lb. It’s currently residing in the local aquarium, where it’s become a bit of a celebrity.
Unfortunately for fashionistas who are loving the current revival of pearl jewellery though, there’s no chance of a giant hidden gem inside the shell, because Shelly is the wrong type of oyster. Although it’s an exceptionally large specimen of the edible oyster, the only species that live in the English Channel. Edible oysters do produce ‘pearls’ but they are of no value, unlike the beautiful varieties that come from other oysters and are used to make jewellery.
The valuable pearls used to make pearl earrings, necklaces, bracelets and other jewellery are found in Pteriidae or feathered oysters, which nowadays are farmed on large pearl farms across the world, mainly in China. Pearls are formed inside the shell of an oyster when a grain of sand or other irritant finds its way in and the oyster builds up layers of a secretion known as nacre to cushion it with a smooth surface. Natural pearls are far more valued than cultured pearls as they are difficult to find and fully formed round natural pearls are rare.
Pearls have been worn for hundreds of years, traditionally by brides on their wedding day and they have constantly featured in the wardrobes of the rich and glamorous for generations. They are a sign of purity and love, as well as suggesting wealth and class. The introduction of cultured pearls to the jewellery market has made them more widely available in recent years, and the popular vintage fashion revival along with a number of high profile celebrities publicly displaying their love for pearl sets and other classic jewellery means pearls are as desirable as ever. The most recent celebrity flashing her pearls on the fashion pages is America’s first lady Michelle Obama, who is becoming a star in her own right for her individual style and ‘imaginative’ jewellery choices including lots of pearls and brooches.
My Earth4Energy Review: How I made free electricity at home
29.November, 2009
Hello, and thanks for checking out my Earth4Energy review<. Lots of folks have been getting this how-to guide, so does it live up to all the hype? Let’s have a look.
First off, I’m a hard working guy that doesn’t like to throw his money down the drain, my wife even accuses me of being a miser at times… but it’s for the good of the family, right?
When I came across Earth4Energy, I have to say I was very interested. And a bit skeptical. Because of my background in Engineering, the idea of using solar and wind energy to save money one my utility bills was very attractive.
At the time, I had never really put together any type of solar or wind energy systems, although I must say I’ve always been curious. We do what we can for our earth, like recycling and using flourescent bulbs, and this seemed like another good thing we could be doing. (I have to admit that the saving money part is what really got me excited, but if I can do good AND save money, then we’re on to something here!)
An old college friend of mine (Mike) got this package last year, and one weekend I was over at his house for a BBQ and saw that he had solar panels on his roof and a small wind turbine quietly humming away in his back yard. I didn’t say it to his face, but I was actually a little jealous, and quite impressed with his work. I guessed he had paid big bucks to a contractor to come out and set up solar at his home, but then he said that he had done everything himself with parts he picked up at a local store. I thought that was a little far fetched, but he took me inside and showed me the package he bought that taught him how to put it all together.
Then it started making sense… the layout was very concise, and every step was shown in very clear detail. Mike turned to me and said, plainly, “Yeah, we actually pay about every month for electricity.” He showed me his electric bill for the last month, and I was surprised to see it was a single digit, quite unlike my 3 digit bill.
While Mike is a good friend, he was never the brains of the group back in school. I knew right then and there that if he could do it, I most certainly could too. I picked up my own Earth4Energy package that night and began to check it out. I had success with the Earth4Energy guide after a few weekends, and I put together an Earth4Energy review to share my experience.
Here is a breakdown of what’s in the package:
I. The eBook - This is the main part of the guide, and the sections I found most helpful were:
- A complete explanation of how solar systems work, and how to get the electricity from your panels to the outlets in your home. This portion also goes over the basic components of the system so you can familiarize yourself with everything. Some of these systems and their descriptions include:
The Kilowatt-hour meter. While this piece my sound simple, it’s a crucial element to have, and the Earth4Energy guide tells you everything you need to know.
Inverters - What they are, how they work, and how you can find one for ten bucks. - A VERY valuable tip that teaches you how to find SOLAR PANELS for FREE. This tip actually saved me more money than anything.
How to save money by wiring your own solar panels and avoid the cost of pre-fabricated parts. - How to create your own solar energy panels from very low cost materials.
- How you can create your own wind turbine. This part comes with plenty of great tips, some include:
- 5 things all wind turbines have in common, and why you need to make sure you don’t get oversold by a manufacturer calling it some fancy name and charging more than they should.
- A section on how to cut the blades to create maximum efficency.
- A complete guide to sizing requirements, so you know how big the system needs to be to generate the right amount of electricity for your home
The best wiring combinations, so you can wire your system optimally and prevent overlaods.
II. The Videos - These are amazingly helpful. Nothing beats actually watching someone go through the steps right in front of you. These are being updated constantly, and you can find a really good tutorial about building solar cells. It guides you through the steps of making it by yourself so you can avoid the cost of pre-fabricated pieces.
III. The CD - You can get the complete package in an instant download, or in CD form. The download is obviously faster, but the CD option is available.
IV. The Bonuses - Michael Harvey has put together a really compelling guide here, but on top of everything he includes some really great bonuses. I’ve noticed over time that he’s always adding to these, so I won’t mention them here because everything is updated so often. Some folks have mentioned that the bonuses alone were worth more than the cost of the Earth4Energy Guide.
I hope you’ve enjoyed my Earth4Energy review, and can soon start making your own electricity while doing your part for the planet at the same time!
Pet Rabbits Have Required Essentials
29.November, 2009
Rabbits may be small in stature, but they have a lot of special needs and requirements that differ from the normal type of pets that we are accustomed to. So if you are considering going down to your pet store and getting a rabbit for a pet, you need to learn about how to take care of a rabbit first. To get you started, here are some things you should learn:
Rabbit Cage
Ideally, your rabbit’s cage should be at least 4 times larger than your rabbit, but bigger is always better especially if it will spend most of its time inside the cage. The cage’s floor should be solid. Many rabbit cages are still made with wire floors with pull out pans underneath because it can be cleaned easily, but cages of this type are uncomfortable and my cause sores. If the cage you have has a wire floor, cover it with sisal mats, grass or a piece of wood.
What Rabbits Eat
Rabbits love to eat green this you need to have a supply of grass hay on hand such as brome or timothy. Grass hay helps to ensure that your rabbit stays healthy by keeping its intestinal tract clean. You also need a supply of quality rabbit pellets. Younger rabbits (under 6 months old) should eat pellets that contain at least 18% fiber and 15% to 19% protein. As a third part of your rabbits diet, you’re going to need to feed it plenty of dark leafy green vegetables such as collard greens, carrots tops, lettuce, and turnip greens. As a rule of thumb, you should give your rabbit 2 cups of greens for every 6 pounds that the rabbit weighs. Give your rabbit a clean and fresh supply of water at all times.
Litter Box Training
Rabbits have a tendency to use a single part of its cage for littering. In your pet has decided on what part of its cage it’s going to use, you need to fill that area with timothy hay or pelleted newspaper litter. The box should be kept clean and changed daily so that the odors can be kept to a minimum.
Cage Maintenance
Take the time to clean your rabbits cage a minimum of one time a week. When you do this, you need to put your rabbit in another safe place in your house, or an alternate cage. You need to sweep the floor clean and remove any of the solid waste material. Whenever you clean and scrub the cage floor, make sure that you use soap and warm water.
Handling Your Rabbit
Improper handling of your rabbit can cause injury. Do not pick up the rabbit from it’s ears. The way to pick up your rabbit safely, is to use one hand to give its front leg support and the other hand it to give its back legs support.
Supplies for Your Rabbit
The following items are a requirement if you want to own a rabbit: A cage or a hutch, litter for the litter box, a rabbit carrier or pet carrier, hay, a brush for grooming, rabbit pellets for food, chew toys that are safe, a box for digging, and any watering and food bowl which is preferably made out of ceramic.
This If you need to find a good place to buy these items, you can find them all at rabbit cages for sale.
Are you enthusiastic about fishing, but can seldom afford to? Many fishermen all over the world have discovered that inflatable fishing boats let them to go angling more often, since they are not required to purchase a fishing vessel that will cost them a bunch of cash, when they can’t even use it for half the year.
Fishermen who have classic fishing vessels need to have a place to keep and work on their vessels, commonly with marinas that charge high prices. But for people who have inflatable vessels, they can simply deflate it, pack it up, and put it away when they’re not fishing in it. To say again fishermen can inflate the vessel when they want to employ it, and deflate it when they don’t, and they can just keep it on their property!
For fishermen in today’s world, safety is an exceedingly significant issue. Modern inflatable fishing vessels provide all the essential safety components that are necessary for a great fishing experience on the water. A lot of people immediately think of a picture of a little inflatable life boat floating on the ocean when they see the words “inflatable vessel” together, just this is a mistake that can be quickly rectified. By examining the current inflatable fishing pontoons and boats that are on the marketplace, these individuals will find that contemporary inflatable vessels are usable and dependable, and feature large areas that can accommodate a whole family or other assembling of fishermen for a entire day of fishing fun.
When fishermen opt to purchase a fishing boat, they are usually interested about how much it will cost. Conventional boats will set them back thousands of dollars for the most austere of vessels. They will have to pay up even more for any upgrades they desire to add on to the boat. If you pick out an inflatable vessel instead of a conventional boat, you will keep your upfront costs at a minimum. Several styles can be purchased for less than $1,000.00, which allows you to hold on to the majority of your cash for other items related to fishing, such as permits, gear or safety products. in the end, a fishing vessel is not the only requirement for a fisherman who wants to hook a couple of fish when he’s out fishing for the day. He’ll unquestionably need more than good fortune. He’ll need a top-flight fishing pole and superior lures as well.NOW!
High Risk Lenders
29.November, 2009
For people who need cash but have bad of no credit there is hope. There are high risk lenders out there that will give them a loan but at a price. In order for them to provide such a loan to people with bad credit, they have to impose a few statutes and rules to cover their backside.
The one penalty, as it were, is a high interest rate for the loan. That is one reason why you don’t want to borrow for just anything. If it is an emergency that is ok if you pay it back as quickly as possible. And when you do pay it back in a timely manner it will help repair your credit somewhat.
Your debt to income ratio will play an important role in whether or not you will be approved for the loan. While these companies are not as strict as the average financial institutions, they still have some rules that are quite stringent.
And while the interest rate is pretty steep for these types of loans, there is a bright side. The economic climate of today has forced these companies to lower their rates somewhat so it is not as bad as it could be.
When you are looking for an high risk lenders you need to begin with your local banks first. Check with them and see what kind of deal you can make. And if that fails you can do a search on the internet for terms concerning high risk debt and you will find plenty of companies. Just be sure to do your due diligence and make sure they have been around for a while.
How To Treat A Sick Goldfish
28.November, 2009
Diagnosing goldfish disease as early as possible is an important part of maintaining your aquarium. If you can’t readily identify a goldfish disease see your local vet, or pet store.
Fish live by absorbing oxygen and they give off carbon dioxide as a waste product. Plants in daylight do the opposite, so that what is poison to one species gives life to the other. So adding plants to your aquarium will assist in keeping your goldfish healthy and disease free.
Prevention is always easier than cure, so by keeping your aquarium clean, feeding your fish properly, avoiding wide temperature fluctuations and performing partial water changes as necessary you will go a long way to keeping your fish healthy. However, no matter how well you maintain your tank, from time to time one or more of your goldfish may become stressed or ill.
Some of the more common goldfish diseases are discussed in this article.
Anchor worms will appear as a 1/4 to 3/8 inch piece of string with a forked tail. Large anchor worms can be easily seen. They appear as clear, greenish-white or brownish-red strings. After the anchor worms have buried themselves into the flesh of the fish open sores may appear on the skin. The anchor worms may be visible in the sores. Frequently this parasite is introduced into the fish tank from adding live food to the tank, or from aquarium plants, especially those taken from rivers or creeks. Anchor worms attach beneath the fish’s scales and bury their anchor-shaped head under the skin causing ulceration and distress to the fish.
Anchor worms are highly contagious and must be treated immediately. Your pet store will have a treatment for anchor worm, usually in the form of a gyrase inhibitor that can be added to the water in the tank. This should be effective in killing the parasites in three or four days.
Swimbladder disease should be suspected whenever a fish appears to have difficulty stabilizing itself in the tank. It is not uncommon in goldfish although fancy varieties appear more susceptible to this disease. It can be genetic in origin or caused by a variety of other factors including inadequate or improper diet, bacterial infection or even poor quality aquarium water.
Apart from improving the water condition if that is necessary, some fish keepers suggest feeding your goldfish thawed frozen peas. It is also worth feeding the fish with sinking food instead of floating food to minimize the intake of air. It may also be worthwhile moving your sick goldfish to a shallow tank while you treat it.
